Newport, Rhode Island is centrally-located in southern New England and is just an hour from points north like Boston or about three hours from New York City by car. Trains, buses and flights to Providence's T.F. Green Airport are also available to shorten your travel time to and from Newport. The Providence airport lies 25 miles to the north and the train station is located 20 miles west in Kingston, RI at the University of Rhode Island main campus. The Providence airport has grown exponentially over the years, and offers a substantial number of non-stop flights from across the country as well as western European countries. Smaller private/charter planes have access to Newport State Airport located just a few miles outside the city.
Visitors can also choose to fly to Boston's Logan airport, about 75 minutes drive to Newport. Boston's commuter rail sytem (the "T") can take you all the way to Wickford, RI, a short 10 minute drive to Newport. You could also choose to get off at the Providence Airport stop and rent a car from there. Your driving time to Newport from the Providence Airport is only about 20 minutes.
Area hotels and private companies offer shuttle service from the airport daily. In addition, there is a bus terminal at the Gateway Visitor's Center located in downtown Newport with direct service to New York City and Boston. Once you arrive in town, there are several places to rent cars, bikes and scooters on the island.
